PhD Position in Computational Microelectronics Institute for Microelectronics, TU Wien, Austria ** Job Description ** The Institute for Microelectronics is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to work on deterministic solution approaches for the Boltzmann Transport Equation for semiconductors. To strengthen free open source software in our field, the candidate is expected to contribute to our free open source simulator ViennaSHE ( and the underlying ecosystem of libraries such as ViennaCL ( or ViennaGrid ( As one of the main application areas of ViennaSHE is the simulation of reliability issues in semiconductor devices, the candidate will also be involved in these activities, providing exposure to industrially relevant research. Depending on the candidate's skills, the focus is on one of the following: a) improved physical modelling of material properties such as band structures or scattering mechanism, or b) increased numerical efficiency through better discretization methods and/or the development of better preconditioners or nonlinear iteration schemes. The ideal candidate is a team player and feels comfortable working in an international environment. ** Desired Skills and Experience ** The candidate should have prior experience with numerical schemes (e.g. finite element method, finite volume method), for the solution of partial differential equations. Basic knowledge of the basic semiconductor device simulation approaches such as the drift-diffusion model or the Monte Carlo method is a plus. As such, the candidate should have graduated in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related subjects. Profound programming skills in C or C++ are desirable.
