TERM PAPER

Term papers should be relatively short, 15 pages at the maximum. The objective of the term paper is for you to learn about an area of computer communication networks in some depth.

A critical review paper should describe an issue or problem area, e.g. passive optical networks, specify criteria for evaluation, review two or three alternative approaches described in the literature, and provide an assessment or critique of the different approaches. Additional references should be used to describe the problem and/or evaluation criteria. The term paper should highlight the relative strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Note that a critical review paper is not just a review of several papers on the same topic. You are expected to add "intellectual content" by comparing and contrasting the ideas in the papers. The project will be evaluated based on the definition of the problem and evaluation criteria, the thoroughness of the literature review, insight into alternative approaches and their detailed comparison.

Students can work on projects in groups of one or two. Of course, the projects will be judged accordingly. If a student works alone, he/she should chose at least 2 papers; for groups of two, at least 3 papers in a given should be chosen.

The site contains some suggestions about problem areas and papers in that area. The students could choose from the suggested topics and papers, or they c ould select different topics or papers. Send me an email when you have made your choice.
